The reading horse

“Reading is like thinking, like praying, like talking to a friend, like expressing your ideas, like listening to other people’s ideas, like listening to music, like looking at the view, like taking a walk on the beach.” – Roberto Bolaño. According to the Wikipedia, reading is the process of taking in meaning of letters and or symbols especially by sight or touch. The term ‘reading horse’ is a Danish expression used to describe a person who spends most of their time reading. The common English connotation for this term is bookworm which originated from the behaviour displayed by a larvae insect that is said to bore through books. I prefer being called a Bibliophile which means ‘lover of reading’  because I don’t just read to read but to  learn something new, develop my vocabulary and voyage through time in the comfort of my bed.

Reading has always provided a channel of escape from the regular world and all the stess it has to offer. Books have provided a safe place that I can always build with my imagination. Amongst the eight genres of books my favourites are the mystery, fantasy and science fiction genres. I do try to indulge in some romance every now and then but they are not exactly my cup of tea. I am a ‘re-reader’ kind of reader,I can read the same book a number of times without getting fed up with it because I pick up something new each time I do so. My favourite author is Eleanor.H.Porter. I fell in love with her work when I came across her bookPollyanna which is one of the first stories that hooked me. It talks about a little girl who looses her parents and is made to go live with her aunt who is her mother’s only surving relative. I also fancy the works of J.k Rowling, Dan Brown, Ronald Dahl, C.S Lewis, Elechi Amadi, Danielle Steel and Ngugi wa Thongo.

Reading has become more of a ritual than a habit, I just can’t go a day without reading a chapter or two and I have learnt to adjust as time goes by. Before I could easily access the internent and electronic books, I owned a shelf full of different books. Now, I can save the many books in form of electronic documents on my cell phone. This evolution has lightened the load of carrying a stack of heavy books where ever I go.  My love for books has contributed greatly to my character as an omnivert . I am an introvert that only expresses herself to a group of strangers dwelling in her imagination. But I am also an extrovert because I have learnt how to build up conversations from the many self help books I have read.

In conclusion, reading is the process of looking at series of written symbols and getting mean from them. It has five components namely : phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency and reading comprehension strategies. It serves as a hobby for many individuals and a habit for others including myself. It is the one thing that captivates my attention above everything else.
